How to Plant a Voodoo Lily

Overview

The voodoo lily, technically referred to as Dracunculus vulgar, is a perennial plant that originates in the Mediiterranean area. The voodoo lily grows with rich green foliage, bright yellow bulbs and deep purple blooms. Though quite attractive, this lily has a foul aroma and its dark colors attract an array of flies.

Step 1

Select a planting location for the voodoo lily that is well-drained, in remote location and has nutrient-rich soil. Ensure that the location provides at least six hours of partially shaded sunlight. Check to see that the soil has a pH level of 5.0 to7.0. Continue the soil preparation by incorporating 2 inches of compost into the soil to increase the area's nutrient and water retention.

Step 2

Plant the voodoo lily approximately one week after preparing the planting area. Dig a hole that is approximately equivalent to the width and depth of the rhizome. Position the lily in the center of the hole and fill it with soil. Ensure that the final planting area is slightly raised to promote good drainage.

Step 3

Water the voodoo lily thoroughly and infrequently, providing approximately 1 inch of water, once each week. When possible, water the lily with tepid water. Increase the watering schedule during the hot, dry summer months and reduce watering in the colder months.

Step 4

Do not fertilize the voodoo lily immediately after planting. Allow the lily several weeks to establish before feeding. Feed the lily in the early spring, just before the growing season begins. Use a well-balanced, slow release fertilizer and thoroughly incorporate the feed in to the soil. Refer to the fertilizer's label for dosage instrutcions. Provide about 1 inch of water.
