Overview

For many gardeners, squirrels are a headache. Squirrels will invade the bird feeders and eat all the seed, preventing the birds from eating. Commercial bird feeders are available but you can make your own for less money and accomplish the same thing. The squirrels will eventually move on to greener pastures when they realize the food train is over.

Step 1

Poke a hole in the middle of each circle of sheet metal with the nail and hammer. Set aside to assemble the rest of the bird feeder.

Step 2

Tie one end of the wire to the middle of the popsicle stick and place the stick in the bottom of the flowerpot with the wire hanging out of the hole. Once the flowerpot is hung, the stick will hold the pot in place.

Step 3

Thread the wire through the hole in one of the pieces of sheet metal. Slide the metal to the bottom of the flowerpot. This baffle will prevent the squirrels from accessing the seed.

Step 4

Glue the blocks of wood with the super glue to the top edge of the flowerpot in equal spaces. Turn the saucer upside down and glue the saucer to the blocks of wood. This creates an opening for the birdseed to flow into the saucer when turned upside down for the birds to eat.

Step 5

Glue the second piece of metal to the bottom of the saucer. Turn the pot upside down, slide the top piece of metal out of the way and fill the pot with seed through the hole in the pot. Pull the string tight, replace the metal to the top of the pot and hang at least 15 feet from the ground and away from the trunks of trees.

Step 6

Apply Vaseline to the wire and the top of the sheet metal. This keeps the squirrels from climbing down the wire as well.
