Schultz Potting Soil Ingredients

Schultz Potting Soil Plus is the basic brand of potting soil produced by the Schultz company. The package of the potting soil claims it contains essential nutrients and can feed a plant for up to nine months. Schultz says their product is ideal for "tropical, foliage and flowering houseplants, potted vegetables & seedlings." The ingredients of this potting soil are uncomplicated and powerful, providing essential nutrients for plant growth. It is a 12-9-7 formula of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, meaning it is best for plants that look best with strong, green leaves and hardy flowers and roots.

Composted Pine Bark

Composted pine bark is a pH-balanced medium made from allowing pieces of pine to decompose. It locks moisture into the soil and is a source of the trachidermia fungus, a natural fungicide that prevents harmful fungal growth from occurring.

Sphagnum Peat Moss

Sphagnum peat moss is the decayed matter harvested from peat bogs, a type of wetland. Sphagnum peat moss works to trap moisture in soil and increase the amount of air flow that accesses the plants within the soil.

Perlite is a variety of volcanic glass. It is used in Schultz Potting Soil Plus to keep the soil moist and fluffy. This unique mineral is lightweight and well-aerated, allowing the flow of air to reach the roots of plants.

Every plant requires a different level of acidity in the soil. This is called the pH level. Plants that thrive in base soils, or soils with a high pH level, require lime. In addition to raising the pH level of soil and reducing acidity, limestone delivers the nutrients calcium and magnesium.

Ammonium Phosphate

Ammonium phosphate is a compound derived from ammonia and phosphoric acid. It imbues the potting soil with nitrogen, the essential nutrient responsible for the upward growth of plants. Nitrogen helps with the production of chlorophyll and is responsible for a healthy, green plant. Nitrogen is one of the three essential nutrients for plant growth.

Schultz Potting Soil Plus contains both potassium sulfite and potassium nitrate. Potassium nitrate is a source of nitrogen. Potassium sulfite provides potassium to the plants that are grown within the soil. Potassium is responsible for the overall health of the plant, including the absorption of water, photosynthesis, the formation of flowers and fruits, and overall hardiness.

Urea is a colorless, odorless substance used to provide plants with nutrients. It is water-soluble and provides a quick dose of nitrogen to plants when they are watered. While urea is the main component of mammalian urine, the urea used in fertilizers is synthesized in a laboratory.

Monoammonium Phosphate

Monoammonium phosphate adds both nitrogen and phosphorus to Schultz potting soil. It is highly acidic. Phosphorus is responsible for the health of a plant's roots, as well as the growth of seeds. It is considered one of the three essential nutrients.

Sulfate of Potash

Sulfate of potash, or potassium sulfate, provides potting soil with potassium and sulfur. The potassium content adds to the overall growth of the plant and is one of the three essential nutrients for plant growth. Sulfur acts as a pesticide and antibacterial agent. It also contributes to the health of a plant's roots.
