Ideas for Decorating Your Home: Plants

Using plants to decorate a home is a great way to filter your home's air and add a great living touch to the décor. Plants can be used around the house as a window box plant, tabletop plant, corner focal point, patio and deck containers, or in window sills. Houseplants can be a fun way to start gardening.


The amaryllis, Hippeastrum hybrids, is from the amaryllis family. It is a perennial that is good to use in containers or indoors. It is a stately plant that can dress up a table or use as a centerpiece. Flowers are 6 inches wide on 18- to 20-inch-long stems. Grow it in filtered sun, or bright indirect light for indoor use. Soil needs to be moist and well drained. Propagate via bulb offsets or by seed.

Sword Fern

The sword fern, Nephrolepis exaltata, is from the sword fern family. It is a perennial that is good for indoor use and for container gardening. It is a lovely spreading fern, nice for mantles and for room corners. Foliage are 3-foot-long fronds and feathery. Grow it in partial shade or bright filtered light for indoor use. Soils should be moist and rich. Propagate via runner division.


The petunia, Petunia x hybrida, is from the nightshade family. It is an easy-to-grow perennial grown as an annual that is nice for containers. This makes a great patio or deck plant. They can be different sizes and colors depending on cultivar. Grow it in good garden soil in bright sun. Water it regularly. Propagate via seed.


The chrysanthemum, Chrysanthemum hybrids, is from the aster/daisy family. It is an evergreen perennial fast and easy to grow. Garden mums work great in a barrel that is on a patio or deck. Leaves are scented and dark green. Flowers are of various shapes, sizes and colors, depending on the variety. Grow chrysanthemum in acidic soil in sun to partial sun. Moist soil is recommended. Propagate via division or by spring/summer tip cuttings.

Sweet Marjoram

The sweet marjoram, Origanum majorana, is from the mint family. It is a fragrant perennial that some use as an annual. This is a great kitchen window box plant to pick for use. It can get 1 to 2 feet tall. Leaves are grayish green, fuzzy and scented. Grow sweet marjoram in full to nearly full sun. Propagate via seed or cuttings


The oregano, Origanum vulgare, is from the mint family. It is a fragrant perennial shrub. This is another good choice for a kitchen window box plant. Leaves are 1 1/2 inches long and fragrant. Flowers are tiny and tubular, purple and under an inch long. It can get up to 3 feet tall. Grow oregano in well drained soil in full sun. Propagate via seed.
