Lawn tractors are versatile pieces of yard equipment. Most frequently they are used to mow yards. A mower deck is removable attachment located beneath the mower. The sides stick out from the body 12 to 18 inches. Mower decks house the blades used for cutting grass. Damage to the mower deck can occur when something punctures the metal or when it becomes bent during use. You will need to replace the mower deck to prevent further damage and continue to cut your yard evenly.
Removing the Damaged Deck
Park your mower in the driveway or garage or some other level surface. Turn the engine off and remove the key. Engage the parking brake and disengage the mower blades. Lower the mower deck to its lowest cutting point using the lever to the right of the seat. Right and left are determined by operating position.
Position yourself so that you can see beneath the Craftsman lawn tractor. Remove the engine belt from the pulley; it is located beneath the engine and in front of the mower deck.
Remove the retainer spring (sometimes referred to as cotter pins) that connects the clutch to the clutch rod using pliers. This will be located on the left side beneath the body of the lawn tractor (the corresponding foot pedal will be on the top of the body).
Remove the retainer spring that connects the anti-sway bar to the chassis bracket. Disconnect the anti-sway bar. The anti-sway bar is located at the rear of the mower deck.
Remove the retainer springs that connect the suspension arms to the deck brackets. These are located in the center toward the front of the mower deck.
Remove the retainer springs that connect the front links. These are located at the front of the mower deck.
Lift the suspension arms using the lever to the right of the seat to their highest level. Carefully slide the mower deck from beneath the lawn tractor.
Installing a New Mower Deck
Slide the mower deck beneath the lawn tractor. The discharge chute should be to the right of the lawn tractor.
Lower the suspension arms to their lowest point. Line up the front links and insert retainer springs to secure.
Align the suspension arms to the deck brackets. Secure with retainer springs. Line up the anti-sway bar with the chassis bracket. Insert retainer springs. Reconnect the clutch to the clutch rod.
Re-attach the engine belt to the engine pulley. Raise the mower deck to its highest position. Check the alignment of the mower deck.
