The best green roof plants are shallow-rooted, alpine types which tolerate the dry, low-soil conditions of most roof gardens. Good choices include succulents such as sedum and stonecrop varieties; herbs such as thyme, chickweed, purslane and chives; and flowering perennials, including phlox, bellflower, thrift and ice plant.
