The Best Flowers to Plant

Some flowers and plants exist that a gardener has to struggle and persuade to grow--and then there are generally carefree and low-maintenance plants, which are obviously preferable. The best flowers to plant can either be ones that are prime for your location, or ones that will work in nearly every location. These fast-growing--and easy-growing--plants are perfect for the majority of gardens.

Purple Coneflower

The purple coneflower, Echinacea purpurea, is a fast-growing perennial. It is easy to grow and can bring butterflies to the garden. This plant can reach 3 feet in height with coarse leaves 3 to 8 inches long and purple flowers that are 3 inches wide. Propagate via seed or root division. This is a top flower pick among many due to the ease of growth, the lack of disease and pest issues, and its drought tolerance.

Common Sunflower

The common sunflower, Helianthus annuus, is a fast growing annual. It will be easy to grow and bring butterflies and birds to the garden. This plant can average 8 to 15 feet tall with hairy leaves and yellow flowers 8 to 12 inches wide. Edible seeds are in the middle of the flowerhead. They need full sun and well drained soil. Propagate via seed. This is a top flower pick due to their drought tolerance, their edible tasty seeds, and their tall pretty flowers.

Nasturtium

The nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) is a fast growing annual. It is easy to grow and brings hummingbirds to the garden. Leaves are 2 to 5 inches wide and pale green. Flowers are 1 to 2 inches wide in many colors. Plant a nasturtium in light sandy soil in full sun or light shade. Propagate via seed. This is a top flower pick for its pretty flowers, its drought tolerance and its tolerance of a light frost--plus the edible flowers, leaves and seeds.

Iron Plant

The iron plant, Aspidistra elatior, is an evergreen perennial good for indoor use and containers. It is easy to grow and is drought tolerant. Leaves are dark green and 12 to 20 inches long. Flowers are hardly seen. Plant an iron plant in well drained soil and deep to moderate shade. Propagate via clump division. This is a top flower pick for its incredibly hardy nature.

Tradescantia zebrina

The plant Tradescantia zebrina--commonly called the "Wandering Jew"--is a fast growing perennial good for indoor use and containers. It is an easy-to-grow plant with hairy, 3-inch-long leaves. Mostly variegated, they can have green, white, pink, silver or burgundy stripes. Plant a wandering Jew in bright or semi-shade. Propagate via seed or cuttings. This is a top flower pick due to its pest and disease resistance and its popularity as a house plant.
