How to Make a Holiday Topiary

Overview

Topiaries are fast gaining popularity as decorations. Typically, topiaries require shaping live trees or bushes into rounded forms, but craft topiaries can be made out of simple craft supplies such as foam balls and wooden dowels. Holiday topiaries can be adjusted to fit a variety of holidays, by changing the colors and theme.

Step 1

Spray paint the terracotta flower pot with green paint; let dry. Put a quarter-size amount of the red paint in a disposable pie tin. Dip one end of a small sea sponge into the paint, press onto a paper towel to remove the excess paint, and press the paint-coated side of the sponge on the green-painted flower pot. Dip the sponge into the red paint as needed and continue pressing all around the pot. Do not completely cover up the green paint. Let the pot dry completely.

Step 2

Insert about 2 inches of one end of a 10-inch wooden dowel into the center of a 4-inch foam ball. Holding the dowel, spray paint the ball with red paint. Insert the dowel into the floral foam in the flower pot allowing the ball to dry completely.

Step 3

Insert about 2 inches of one end of an 8-inch wooden dowel into a 3-inch foam ball. Holding the dowel, spray paint the ball with green paint. Either insert the dowel into a piece of floral foam to allow the ball to dry or lay the ball on paper towels until dry completely.

Step 4

Place red candy-coated chocolate pieces onto a clean disposable pie plate and place the green candies on another pie plate. Remove the 10-inch wooden dowel from the flower pot and while holding one end of the dowel cover a quarter of the 4-inch ball with hot glue. Working quickly, press the glue side of the ball into the red candies using your fingers to help the candies stick. Repeat this, covering another quarter of the ball with hot glue and pressing red candies onto the glue. Continue until the entire ball is covered with the red candies except for the very top of the ball where the 8-inch dowel will be inserted. Insert the 10-inch dowel back into the foam in the flower pot.

Step 5

Repeat step 4 to completely cover the 3-inch ball with green candies. When done, gently insert the 8-inch wooden dowel into the top of the 4-inch ball where there are no candies. If necessary, glue on additional red candies to cover any bare spots after inserting the dowel.

Step 6

Add craft moss on top of the floral foam in the flower pot to cover completely. Then cut two 8-inch lengths of ribbon and tie into a bow around the dowels right underneath each ball.

Tips and Warnings

  • Do not let children eat the candies.
