The best potting soil for houseplants depends on the plant. Tropicals prefer rich, loamy soil with lots of organic matter like peat moss. Cacti and succulents like sandy soil with ample drainage. African violets need a soil with a higher percentage of humus. Ask at a nursery or garden center what type of soil is best for the plant you're buying, and never use garden soil for houseplants.
