A pre-mixed commercial fertilizer labeled "all-purpose" or "general purpose" is typically best for use in most situations, according to Yardener and Burpee. Examples include Miracle-Gro's All-Purpose Plant Food and Nature's Touch All-Purpose Fertilizer. However, better growth may result if you use a fertilizer that's specially prepared for a specific plant type (e.g. vegetable fertilizer or lawn fertilizer).
