Use hand pruners or lopping shears to prune holly bushes (Ilex species) after they finish blooming. Remove dead, damaged or diseased limbs. Trim limbs that protrude from the body of the shrub, or interfere with passageways. Do not remove more than a third of the shrub's healthy growth.
