A standard glyphosate-based broadleaf herbicide is best for box elder, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Kill box elder trees less than 2 feet in height by spraying the herbicide directly onto the foliage. Cut down larger elder trees and allow them to grow several inches of sprouts before spraying with the herbicide.
