Overview

Apricot trees are a fruit-bearing tree that grow well in a backyard garden. The tree will reach a height of 15 to 25 feet and produce a dense canopy of branches. Apricot trees' blossom production benefits from following a pruning maintenance plan, as the tree produces blossoms and fruit on 2-year and older wood growth. A healthy tree that is planted in the proper soil conditions, watered well and fertilized will produce more blossoms than trees that are not well cared-for.

Step 1

Choose an apricot variety that is recommended for the climate it will be grown in. Consult a local greenhouse for recommended varieties.

Step 2

Plant the apricot tree in a location that offers a nutrient-rich soil that is well-draining and in full sun conditions.

Step 3

Water the tree well during the growing season by giving the tree a deep watering every week when rain levels are low. Water the tree twice a week during the summer months. Low moisture will prevent bud growth the following year.

Step 4

Fertilize the apricot tree in the spring season with a small application of nitrogen fertilizer. Fertilize the tree a second time once there is fruit set on the tree to prevent draining the nutrient levels from the tree.

Step 5

Prune tree growth that is over 2 years old, as blossoms form on 2-year-old wood. Limit the amount of pruning done on the tree in the first 2 years of growth.

Step 6

Prune weak branches, and remove fruiting branches that are 6 years old or older, to encourage new wood growth.
