How to Get the Most Fruit From an Apricot Tree


Apricots are a good choice for at-home fruit tree production. Healthy, well-kept trees will provide many sweet and juicy apricots for your table. Low yields may be caused by any number of factors, including inadequate watering or nutrition, improper pruning and trimming practices, and poor pollination. Your attention to issues like these can help improve the health and growth of your apricot trees, thereby maximizing their ability to produce.

Step 1

Water regularly at three week intervals. Provide deep waterings at each interval. Do not over water.

Step 2

Feed apricot trees during the first year of growth with 1 cup of a high-nitrogen fertilizer for every inch of trunk width, each month during April through July. After the first year, apply 2 cups each month. Place the fertilizer along the drip line of the tree canopy.

Step 3

Reduce the level of competition with other plants by weeding around each apricot tree. Grasses and other weeds can significantly deplete the levels of nitrogen in the soil

Step 4

Control diseases and pests using fungicides and insecticides, as needed. Do not used pesticides immediately before or during periods when honeybees are being used as pollinators.

Step 5

Use honeybees as a pollinator during periods of bloom. Place hives along the edge of the orchard to allow easy access to the trees.

Step 6

Prune and train each apricot tree to allow for proper air flow through the tree and better light penetration into the center of the tree. Trim any branches that will not support the weight of fruit.
