How to Make a Topiary for the Mantle

Overview

You can easily make a topiary for the mantle that's scaled to fit your room and your fireplace surround. Look for everything you need to create beautiful topiaries at your local craft store. You can also order supplies from online floral retailers. Once you have your topiary form, you can add fresh or silk flowers and greenery to create different floral designs for every season.

Step 1

Cut two 2-inch diameter dowels to measure 15 inches long each. At least 8 inches of the dowel will be inserted into the floral ball or the floral foam. You can adjust the height of your mantle topiary by adjusting the length of the dowels.

Step 2

Spray paint the dowels, floral foam balls and planter to coordinate with the decor in your room. You could also elect to paint them green to coordinate with the foliage in your topiary. Let the paint dry.

Step 3

Slice a section from the block of floral foam to fit inside the planter. Insert the foam into the planter so that the top of the foam is 1 inch beneath the top rim of the planter.

Step 4

Insert one end of one dowel at least 4 inches into the center of the foam in the planter. Center a floral foam ball on top of the dowel and insert the ball over the dowel at least 4 inches. This is the first ball in a two-tiered topiary for the mantle.

Step 5

Insert one end of the remaining dowel at least 4 inches into the center of the first ball in your topiary form. Center the remaining ball on top of the dowel and press down to insert the dowel at least 4 inches into the second ball. Hold the second dowel firmly before you press down on the foam ball.

Step 6

Cut the fresh flower stems 2 inches below the flower blossoms. Cut 5 inch lengths of floral wire for each stem. Tape the wire onto the stem with floral tape. You can use silk flowers to make a topiary for your mantle, just cut the stems 2 inches below the blossom with wire cutters. There is no need to add wire to silk flowers.

Step 7

Insert the flower stems into the floral foam balls until the base of the blossom rests against the foam ball. Place flowers until each ball is covered.

Step 8

Wrap a coordinating ribbon around the dowels. Tie a bow from the same ribbon around the base of the planter. Hold the ribbon in place with hot glue.

Step 9

Cover the floral foam in the planter with craft moss. You can also use decorative stones to add more color to your topiary.
