Overview

There is a big advantage to using pre-germinated seeds in locations with short growing seasons. Many varieties of plants take longer to grow than climate permits, in these areas. By starting seeds indoors, several weeks before the last frost, you can get a head start. When weather permits, seedlings, rather than seeds can be transplanted outdoors. Even if you garden in a warm climate, planting pre-sprouted seeds will give you plants that mature earlier in the season.

Step 1

Harden off your seedlings, before transplanting them. The term "harden off" refers to acclimating indoor or greenhouse seedlings to the outdoor climate. After the final frost in your location, place the seedlings in a protected area for half a day. Increase the amount of time the plant is outdoors, each day. By the time a week has passed and the plant has spent an entire 24 hours outside, you may proceed with transplanting outdoors.

Step 2

Water your pre-germinated seedlings during the hardening-off period, as needed.

Step 3

Plant your seedlings on a cool day or evening. If it is cloudy or drizzling, all the better. The transplanting process will likely put your new plants in a bit of shock. The hot sun can exacerbate this condition.

Step 4

Give the seedlings an ample watering.

Step 5

Dig a hole, with a trowel (small shovel), as deep as the seedling's current container and just a bit wider, all the way around. Turn the pot upside down, holding onto the seedling, to remove the plant. You may need to bump the side or squeeze the bottom of the pot if the seedling does not come out readily.

Step 6

Place the seedling, along with it's original soil, into the hole. Fill in around the plant soil with additional soil, until it is secure. Use just a bit of soil on top of the original plant soil and press down, gently.

Step 7

Water the plant, thoroughly.
