How to Plant Zoysia in Bermuda Grass

Overview

Plant Zoysia grass in an established Bermuda lawn by properly sowing the seeds and creating favorable conditions for the future growth of Zoysia and Bermuda grass. Zoysia grass is dense and slow growing; Bermuda grass is tough, fast-growing and drought tolerant. Both Zoysia and Bermuda grasses are wear resistant, warm climate varieties that prefer moist, high pH soils, and direct sunlight.

Step 1

Rake the lawn vigorously to remove thatch, rocks, and organic debris with a flexible, metal rake.

Step 2

Distribute 2 pounds of Zoysia seeds per 1000 square feet of lawn over the Bermuda grass using a spreader.

Step 3

Sprinkle a light layer of lawn lime over the seeds using a fertilizer spreader. Lime increases the top soil's pH balance.

Step 4

Add a half inch of clean compost or peat moss fertilizer over the seeds and lime using a spreader.

Step 5

Water the seedlings once daily or until new grass growth is visible through the fertilizer.

Step 6

Trim back trees and bushes to increase sunlight on the lawn using outdoor trimmers.
