How to Use Stones in the Garden

Stones are a great addition to any landscape or garden since they can be used in several different ways. Stones come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors, and they can be ideal for their attractiveness, versatility and ability to provide coverage or decor.

Step 1

Create stepping stones or a footpath through your garden to a pond or a sitting area. You can use a wide range of stones for this, as long as they are flat and large enough for an adult's foot. Creating this can be as easy as positioning stones on even parts of garden's ground so they are sturdy, or you can create a permanent path by securing the stones with concrete.

Step 2

Add stones as flower, vegetable or fruit bed borders in the garden. Find stones that you like or that are attractive to the eye, in similar sizes. You can also use stones as a natural barrier to block off a portion of the garden, or an area you don't want people to enter.

Step 3

Use stones to create a Zen garden area in your garden. Use the lumber to build a wooden box and line it with the tarp to create a level area for the sand or pebbles. Place stones inside the Zen garden to create a relaxing atmosphere. Plants and small waterfalls may also be added.

Step 4

Consider bringing in large boulders and stones that can provide privacy or block unpleasant views. Stones can hide gardening or house equipment, such as water hoses or meters.

Step 5

Place stones by water features to enhance them, making them look more natural and cozy. They can create places to sit or kneel.

Step 6

Use interesting or extremely appealing rocks in areas where vegetation won't grow. Create an arrangement or design on the ground or a wall to draw eyes away from the bare area and to the garden feature.
