A compost pail is any container that you collect your kitchen waste in before moving it to your compost bin. You can invest in a fancy compost pail, buy why would you do that? Commercial compost pails insist that they will control odor, but you can easily create your own compost pail and still have odor control.
Fiind a 5-gallon bucket with a tight-fitting lid. Kitty litter buckets are ideal and easily available if you have a cat or know a cat owner. Choose a smaller bucket if you do not create a lot of kitchen waste in between trips to the compost bin. Large food storage containers or plastic storage bins may also work as a compost pail.
Drill a small circle of holes in the center of the lid. Use a strong adhesive to attach a carbon filter designed for cat boxes to the inside of the bucket lid. Use only enough glue to attach it -- not so much that you will not be able to remove and replace the filter in several months.
Place your compost pail in a convenient but discreet place in your kitchen. Under the kitchen sink is an ideal place to collect all of your food scraps throughout the week.
