Gerbera daisies are native to South Africa. They are available in many colors and can be used as blooming pot flowers or in beds or borders outdoors. Gerbera daisies are very slow-growers, taking four to five months from seeding to flowering, and they must be repotted and cared for properly as they grow. Gerbera daisy seeds are very tiny and light--6,000 to 8,000 seeds per ounce. Handle them carefully indoors in a draft-free place.
Prepare a starting medium blend of half peat and half perlite. Gerbera daisy seedlings need plenty of humus, but they also must have excellent drainage. Damping off and other fungal problems can arise if you use heavier potting soils.
Wash the planting flat in hot soapy water and rinse thoroughly. Commercial growers typically use cell trays to make transplanting easier. Fill the planting cells with the starting medium blend. Moisten the blend before sowing the seeds.
Open the seed packet carefully. Once you have opened packet, you should use all of the seeds. Gerbera daisy seeds quickly lose viability after they are exposed to air. Plant the seeds by placing them on the surface of the starting medium. Cover them with a very light layer of fine vermiculite.
Cover the starting flat to maintain high humidity. Use bottom heat and maintain a temperature of 70 to 72 degrees. Provide at least 12 hours of light per day. The seeds should finish germinating in seven to 14 days.
