Live topiaries provide an enchanting addition to any garden. Whether creating trees, shapes, or animals, following some simple guidelines will guarantee a successful display. For the diligent and creative gardener, a plain yard can be turned into a zoo with some simple supplies and a green thumb.
Determine the desired topiary shape and create a frame with chicken wire, supporting and stabilizing the frame with wooden dowels.
Fill the frame with sphagnum moss to give the topiary a fuller look.
Plant the ivy around the bottom of the frame and weave its vines into the structure of the frame.
Prune the ivy close to the frame and incorporate any wayward vines when possible.
