How to Plant Perennial Seeds: Poppies

Overview

Poppies are a beautiful garden flower that come in a variety of colors. Properly planting your perennial poppies will allow you to enjoy them year after year without the need to replant or reseed. Poppy seeds are used in baking and cooking, and wild birds love them.

Step 1

Fill separate clean containers with a good-quality starting mix. Planting your poppy seeds in separate containers will allow more room for root growth.

Step 2

Place the one to three seeds about a quarter of an inch deep under the soil surface.

Step 3

Moisten the soil lightly with water and place the containers in a bright, warm spot.

Step 4

Keep the soil moist until the poppies germinate. Once they germinate, turn the pots occasionally to distribute sunlight equally on all sides.

Step 5

Transplant to the garden while they are 1 to 2 inches high, at least 8 inches apart. Do not plant outdoors until the last frost has passed. Poppies thrive in full sun to partial shade. Fertilize them once a month.
