Overview

Pear trees are an ideal addition to any garden or landscape for their beautiful shape, delicious fruit harvest and shade. There are many varieties of pears that range from small bushes to tall trees. Depending on your region and climate, you should research to see which variety would work best for you. There are some key things to keep in mind when planting pear trees from seeds.

Step 1

Put the pear seed about 1/2-inch deep into a small planter pot that is filled with an equal mixture of good-quality potting soil and compost about three months before the last frost in your region. This planter pot needs to be small enough to fit into a plastic Ziploc bag.

Step 2

Sprinkle water over the soil to make it damp. Put the pot inside a plastic bag and seal it shut. Store the bag in the refrigerator.

Step 3

Remove the planter pot from the bag after the last frost date has passed. Place it in a sunny window sill and keep the soil moist for a couple of days, letting the pot temperature get to around 70 degrees F.

Step 4

Transplant the seedling to an area that is cleared of weeds, grass and rocks. It should be a mostly sunny area that gets less then partial shade. Keep the seedling well mulched and watered for optimum growth.

Step 5

Stake the location of the seedling so you don't trample or mow over it.
