How to Stop a Hummingbird Feeder From Leaking

Overview

A common complaint from people who own bottle-type hummingbird feeders is a continual leak from the spout of the feeder. Perform a few simple steps to minimize the hummingbird feeder from leaking, and then select a sheltered area in your garden that does not receive direct sunlight. This will help keep the temperature of the nectar in the feeder lower, thereby reducing the amount of air in the feeder and the amount of pressure on the spout.

Step 1

Keep the hummingbird feeder filled to the top at all times. After you fill the reservoir with nectar, reassemble the feeder and turn the feeder right side up quickly to minimize the amount of air that enters the reservoir.

Step 2

Hang your hummingbird feeder in a shady location to keep the nectar cooler.

Step 3

Wash the feeder thoroughly every time you refill it. Use hot water and a bottle brush to clean all of the nooks and crannies of the feeder.

Step 4

Make a white vinegar cleaning solution and use it to clean the hummingbird feeder once per month. Combine ¼ cup white vinegar with 1 cup hot water. Saturate all surfaces (both inside and out) with this solution and then rinse the feeder at least three times with fresh, cold water.

Step 5

Soak the stopper and spout in very hot water until the tube inside is pliable. Bend the tube slightly to make the angle sharper and reassemble the hummingbird feeder.
