How to Plant Pumpkin

Planting pumpkin seeds takes careful pre-planting planning. In addition to needing a great deal of space, pumpkin plants need a full-sun location and precise planting conditions. Among these conditions is temperature, which needs to be around 70 degrees Fahrenheit. You also need to be able to access the plants for pruning.

Step 1

Prepare a planting area that receives at least 6 to 7 hours of direct sunlight per day. Since pumpkins need a light, rich well-draining soil that possesses a pH of 6.0 to 6.8, amend the area with a combination of compost and store-bought manure in equal parts.

Step 2

Soak the pumpkin seeds in a container of room temperature water overnight before planting. This will help soften the husk, helping the seed germinate more quickly.

Step 3

Create a hill of dirt that is 6 inches tall and 3 feet in diameter. Around the base of the hill, create a "moat" to help keep water near the roots. Each hill can hold two to three pumpkin plants, and each hill should be about 10 feet apart.

Step 4

Place four to five seeds, about 6 inches apart, in a circle on the top of each hill.

Step 5

Lightly sprinkle soil over the seeds, forming a 1-inch layer to protect the seeds from wind and foraging birds or animals.

Step 6

Water in small amounts so the soil doesn't run off the seeds immediately after planting. After planting, apply 1 to 2 inches of water per week.
