Overview

Azaleas that are trimmed regularly, with proper trimming techniques, will become bushier and produce more blossoms during the growing season. You can even make azalea cuttings to increase the number of these beautiful bushes for your yard without spending additional landscaping money.

Step 1

Cut off all the bottom branches on the bottom 2 inches of the azalea shrub with sharp pruning shears after the last chance of frost. Cut flush with the center of the azalea.

Step 2

Trim approximately 2 inches off the tips of all the azalea branches with sharp pruning shears after the last chance of frost.

Step 3

Completely remove any dead branches from the azalea shrub anytime after the last chance of frost and during the growing season.

Step 4

Pinch off wilted and dead flower blooms on a regular basis during the growing season to encourage new blooms. Re-check the plant, particularly the inside area for any additional dead branches or sections. Completely remove these.

Step 5

Trim the azalea plant to the desired shape and height with sharp pruning shears, after the shrub has completely finished blooming. Check the base for new growth and repeat step 1.

Step 6

Apply a 2-inch layer of organically-rich mulch at the base of the azalea plant after the blooming season and prior to the first frost. This will help to protect the plant roots during the fall and winter months.

Step 7

Water the azalea each time you trim, cut or pinch growth from the plant. Water at the base of the plant and avoid getting water on the freshly cut areas.

Tips and Warnings

  • Trimming azaleas in late fall and winter will stunt growth and reduce blooms for the following spring months.
