Discovered in South America by Spanish colonists, lemon verbena was brought back to the Old World and quickly became a favorite among herb growers for its wonderful culinary properties. Today, it is still a favorite all over the world, and by following a few relatively easy steps, almost anyone can cultivate this shrub in containers in the comfort of their own homes.
Purchase a lemon verbena shrub from a nursery. You also can start a plant from the cuttings of an established lemon verbena shrub if you have access to one.
Transplant your lemon verbena shrub into a growing pot with a diameter roughly half again as wide as the root ball of the shrub. Place a base of potting soil in the growing pot and then nestle the root ball in so that the top of the ball rests just below the surface of the pot. Fill in with potting soil, making sure to leave a bit of room for watering.
Water your lemon verbena regularly. The lemon verbena is going to require a good deal of moisture, so it is best to keep the soil moist to the touch. Just be careful not to over saturate.
Place in an area with full sunlight exposure. If no place in your house fits this criteria, it may be necessary to supplement with grow lamps.
Prune back recent growth at the end of the season. In the early fall cut back some of the newer growth to help the lemon verbena conserve energy over the coming winter. This is especially important if you live in a colder climate.
