How to Care for a Japonica Pink Perfection Plant

Overview

Japonica Pink Perfection refers to the flowers of a particular species of camellia, a slow-growing shrub or small tree. Pink Perfection, cultivated since the 1700s, is a double bloom, reminiscent of a soft pink rose. If you live in a mild area and are looking for a way to add some color and elegance to your winter garden, consider the japonica Pink Perfection camellia.

Step 1

Plant the Pink Perfection camellia in a partly shady area of the garden that gets dappled or filtered sunlight. Amend the soil to assure that it is high in acid and well-drained. If your soil is alkaline, add a 2- to 3-inch layer of sphagnum peat or granular sulfur to the soil prior to planting. Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to maintain moisture in the soil.

Step 2

Water the Pink Perfection well and keep the soil moist, but not soggy.

Step 3

Fertilize with a 10-6-4 fertilizer after the plant has been in the ground for one year. The first application should be given after the plant's first blooming season and then again in July.

Step 4

Prune after flowering and just before new growth starts, but only lightly. The Pink Perfection is sensitive to heavy pruning.

Step 5

Inspect the Pink Perfection periodically for typical camellia fungus diseases such as canker, flower blight and root rot. Common pests that will attack the plant include scale, spider mites, aphids, mealy bugs and white fly. Insecticides, such as neem oil, should be effective. For more information on the type of pest infesting your camellia bush, and the proper remedy, contact your local cooperative extension office.
