How to Water Pear Trees

Overview

Pear trees are one of the most low-maintenance trees to grow in a garden or on your landscape. There are two types of pear trees: ornamental and fruiting, and they both require similar care. Besides needing well-drained soil, pear trees need shade in the afternoon. Watering pear trees is also important in order to establish it when it is a young sapling. Keep these key points in mind when caring for and watering, whether you are waiting to harvest pears or have an ornamental variety.

Step 1

Make sure your pear tree is in well-draining soil when watering it, in order for the pear tree to reach full healthy maturity.

Step 2

Soak the roots of a pear tree in a bucket of water prior to planting, for at least 2 hours. This is in order to rehydrate them and keep them from drying out.

Step 3

Water your pear tree while planting it. Once the tree is in the hole and it is backfilled half full with soil that is packed down, fill the hole with water. After the water has drained out, replace the remaining soil and fill with water again.

Step 4

Water your pear tree generously while blossoming and producing fruit, but you want to keep the soil moist, not soaking wet. The pear tree needs around 1 inch of water per week in moderate weather, with around three inches in dry weather.

Step 5

Make sure you don't overwater the pear tree, as this can kill it easily. The roots will rot quickly and destroy the tree.
