Create a beautiful outdoor trellis using bamboo canes. Found in backyards and other outdoor landscapes, bamboo shoots are tall and sturdy, making for a long-lasting trellis design. Local home improvement stores carry pre-cut bamboo that can also be used to create this structure. Situate your trellis among an herb garden or as an entryway into another area of your yard. Plant flowers at the base of the structure for a beautiful focal point. For larger gardens, build two trellises and place them side by side to create one large design.
Measure the area where the trellis will stand to ensure correct dimensions. Create a drawing of the trellis to refer to during the building process. Keep in mind any heavy vines or crops you might want to support to help in choosing the appropriate width and height of the trellis.
Cut the bamboo canes above the node of each shoot in the solid area of the bamboo, using a hand saw. This will ensure that water does not collect inside the open ends, which are below the nodes, and create a mold problem within the shoots. Cut the newly trimmed canes to the desired size.
On a flat surface, attach the bamboo canes together using galvanized wire. Keep one quarter of the bottom of the trellis to use as the "feet" of the structure. Crisscross the canes over each other, forming a lattice shape. At the cross-section of each bamboo shoot, wrap the wire around two to three times. Twist the ends of the wire to secure the poles to one another.
Dig a hole into the ground to place the feet of the bamboo. Place the bamboo feet into the dug holes and, using the soil, fill up the sides. Press firmly down onto the soil for a snug and secure fit. Alternatively, secure the bamboo trellis to an outside fence or garden wall.
Plant creeping vines or flowers to the base of bamboo trellis. Water the plants twice a week until they become fully established. Spread 1 to 2 inches of mulch around the freshly planted flowers to help retain moisture.
