Overview

Growing vegetables or creating a flower garden from seed can be a very rewarding activity. It can also save you money. Starting plants from seed requires only a little hard work and some patience. However, before you know it you will be able to see and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Step 1

Read the instructions on your seed packet. These instructions should let you know if your seeds need to be started indoors or if they can be sown directly into your garden soil. They should also let you know the depth at which to plant your seeds as well as the seeds' germination time (the time it takes to sprout). If you buy your seeds in bulk, you can find get this information from a nursery or online.

Step 2

Sow seeds indoors by planting them in a shallow container. You can purchase containers designed specifically for starting seeds, or you can start your seeds in a container such as a cardboard egg carton. Simply fill the container with a potting soil designed for starting seeds and then plant your seeds at the depth specified.

Step 3

Supply your seeds with moisture and heat to encourage germination. Before your seeds sprout, they do not need light as much as they need heat. Keep them at a room temperature of around 70 degrees F. Use a spray bottle to mist the soil, keeping it moist but not saturated. After the seeds have sprouted, they will need light. Put them in a south-facing window or under plant lights.

Step 4

Transplant your seedlings to larger containers as they grow. Give each seedling the space it needs to flourish. Your seedlings can be transplanted to your garden as soon as the danger of a spring frost has passed.

Step 5

Plant seeds that do not require an indoor start directly into your garden. Root vegetables such as carrots, potatoes, onions and beets can be planted in your garden as soon as your soil is warm and frost-free. Beans and peas also start easily in a garden. Simply plant your seeds at the specified depth and water your garden frequently to keep the soil moist. After your seeds sprout, thin out the seedlings to prevent crowding.

Tips and Warnings

  • Common mistakes with seed planting are planting seeds too deep and giving seeds too much water. Plant too deep and the sprouts will not make it to the surface to reach their much-needed sunlight. Too much water and your seeds will rot in the ground instead of sprouting.
