The morning glory is a fast-growing annual vine that will grow up to 15 feet and can cover a trellis in a few weeks. The pure blue-flowered variety named Heavenly Blue is one of the best known, but there are also morning glories with white, pink, purple and red blossoms.
The flowers of the morning glory live for one day only. New flowers open daily.
Morning glories prefer full sun but will take a little shade. They will grow in almost any soil, but do best in poor soil with low fertility.
Morning glory seeds have a very hard coat, so soaking them in water overnight or nicking them with a nail file will hasten germination.
More compact varieties such as the Good Morning series can be used in hanging baskets or containers.
Morning glory flowers are open only during the day. A related plant, the moonflower, has fragrant white flowers that open at dusk and stay open all night.
