Type of Soil Needed for Rose Bushes

Roses need a sandy loam soil. If you have clay-based soil, add compost and sand; if you have sand-based soil, add compost. When the soil is squeezed it should compact, yet break apart easily when you open your hand. Roses grow best in a pH of 6.0 to 6.5.
