A 1970's NASA-backed study revealed that houseplants remove from the air volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene and formaldehyde, which are carcinogens emitted by materials commonly found in homes. A 2009 Kansas State study found that in-room houseplants were mentally and physically therapeutic for surgical patients.
