Stage 1

Pinto beans are generally planted in the spring in soil that is above 60 degrees F and in rows that are 20 to 30 inches apart. Three to four plants are grown per foot. After planting and sufficient soil temperatures and water, the seeds germinate to emerge a small stand in about four to eight days. This is stage one.

Stage 2 and 3

Stage two is a period of time when the pinto beans rapidly grow. Rapid growth occurs for 28 to 32 days after planting. Stage 3 begins when the blooms first flower. This usually occurs 32 to 40 days after planting. During this stage, the pods also begin to form and in 10 to 14 days, seeds develop. These seeds are the pinto beans.

Stage 4

Stage four is the last stage. It is when the seeds--pinto beans--mature. About 60 to 70 days after planting the pinto bean plant is fully mature. However, the pods and foliage are allowed to dry and turn brown before harvest. This takes another 10 to 30 days. In the end, it takes pinto beans from planting to harvest 70 to 90 days.
