Overview

Daffodils offer gardening enthusiasts the opportunity to bring beautiful flowering indoors during the winter. Daffodils grow extremely well in containers. They can easily be forced in the home to provide unique color and vibrant blooms. Since bulb plants require a cooling off period to force blooms, staggering the creation of posts of daffodils will provide consistent flowers. Bring a little bit of spring into your home by learning how to grow daffodils in containers.

Step 1

Check your planting container for drainage holes. Punch three or four holes in the bottom with a screwdriver and hammer. Placing a container into a water-filled pie pan or plant base will allow the plant to draw up moisture evenly throughout the soil.

Step 2

Fill the container 2/3 full with potting soil.

Step 3

Place the daffodil bulbs in the soil with the bud pointing upward. The top of the bulb should be even with the rim of the pot. Use three to four bulbs per gallon container. Bulbs can be spaced close together, but they should not touch each other or the sides of the pot.

Step 4

Fill in around the bulbs with loose potting soil. Don't firm the soil in any way.

Step 5

Water the daffodils thoroughly without disturbing the bulbs. Water the potting soil evenly, being careful not to soak it.

Step 6

Place the pots in a cool, darkened refrigerator or garage with even temperatures between 40 and 45 degrees for 13 to 15 weeks. You also can dig a trench in your garden, place the pots inside the trench and cover the area with mulch to insulate the bulbs for the cooling period.

Step 7

Bring the pots indoors after the cooling period. Position the plants in a cooler, sunny location in your home with temperatures between 60 and 65 degrees. Don't place the plant in a warm area; this will encourage long foliage growth and no flowers.

Step 8

To increase the flowering time, move the pot out of the sun when blooms appear. Make sure the plant stays consistently moist throughout the indoor period.
