How to Grow Green Needlegrass

Green needlegrass is one of the hardiest and easiest of the ornamental grasses for a novice gardener to grow. It is a staple that wildflower meadows should not be without. Its tolerance to a wide range of environments makes green needlegrass a very low maintenance plant to add to the garden. Needlegrass is an early season grass with long seed-heads that stand erect. The seed head starts off green and then turns pale beige once it matures. Whether sowing seeds or plants, needle grass won't disappoint you.

Step 1

Select an area to plant the needlegrass plants or seeds that either receives full sun or partial shade.

Step 2

Clear the area of any weeds or other grasses that may inhibit the ability of the green needlegrass to grow. Once established, green needlegrass is hardy, but it should not be subject to interference from other plants while it is trying to take root.

Step 3

Amend the soil with organic matter such as peat or manure only if the soil is dry and very sandy, as green needlegrass will not grow well in these conditions. If the soil has organic matter to it, there is no need to amend it. Plant the seeds or plants directly into the ground.

Step 4

If you are using seeds, plant the seeds directly during the cooler months of the year. In order for the green needlegrass seeds to germinate, they require a period of cold. Space the seeds approximately one foot apart. Germination rate for green needlegrass seed is relatively low. Water well several times per week until the plants establish themselves and then cut back to once per week.

Step 5

If you are starting from plants, place them directly into the ground in a hole that is twice as big as the plant's root ball. Cover the hole with existing soil. Water the green needlegrass plants three times per week for the first two weeks. Cut back to once every week once the grass has established itself.
