Overview

Groundnut or Arachis hypogaea is an annual that produces edible nuts. It grows to be about 6 to 12 inches high and has bright yellow blooms. The leaves are egg-shaped, wide and sometimes hairy. Groundnut is known to grow in many regions, including Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Oklahoma and Texas. After a plant has grown for one year, several tubers can be harvested from it.

Step 1

Choose a planting site that is in the full sun. Groundnut thrives in warmth and sunlight but doesn't do as well in shade. If you choose to plant in a pot, inside or out, that's possible too, as long as it's in a sunny, warm spot.

Step 2

Buy a pH test kit from a nursery or garden store. Test the pH level of your soil. Groundnut prefers an acidic soil, ranging from 5.1 to 6.5 pH.

Step 3

Lower the pH if the soil is not acidic enough. To drop it 1.0 point, mix 1.2 ounces of ground rock sulfur per square yard if you're dealing with sandy soil. All other soils require 3.6 ounces per square yard. Mix the sulfur in thoroughly. Wood chips, composted leaves or sawdust will also lower the pH.

Step 4

Dig holes for the bulbs or seedlings that are about 3 inches deep. Space them 24 to 36 inches apart. Cover the plants with soil and pack firmly.

Step 5

Keep the soil consistently moist. If it's almost dry to the touch, it is time to add more water. Do not let it dry out between waterings. In warm climates, this may mean daily waterings. In cooler climates, you can water every other day.
