Dill not only adds a tangy, delicious flavor to not only pickles, but to chicken, fish, salads, soups, sauces and breads. In addition to its culinary uses, the dill plant is also lovely to look at. We usually think of dill as a plant that belongs outdoors in the herb garden, but it is also easy to grow indoors from seed. Once the dill reaches maturity, you can snip a bit of the lacy tops for use in the kitchen, save the seeds for dill pickles, or put a few long stems in a cut flower bouquet.
Fill a few 3- or 4-inch pots with good quality potting soil. Plant a few dill seeds in each pot and cover the seeds with about ¼ inch of potting soil. Mist the soil lightly with a spray bottle.
Put the pots in a sunny window that will receive at least 6 hours of sunlight and keep the soil evenly moist. If you live in a cloudy climate, put the pots under a florescent grow light.
Move the dill seedlings to larger containers when they reach about 6 inches in height. Choose pots that are sturdy and at least 10 inches deep, and be sure they have several drainage holes in the bottom.
Provide support for the dill plants when they get tall, or they can bend and break. This can be done with wooden stakes or small bamboo poles. Attach the dill to the support loosely with twist ties or strips of pantyhose.
