Very few things in life are more annoying than mosquitoes. And since 1999, when the West Nile virus was introduced to the United States, mosquitoes also can present a health hazard. They can ruin your picnic or barbecue and can keep you awake when they dive bomb your ears and bite your tender parts. Sprays and lotions are available for sale, but if you prefer to use a more natural approach to deterring these insects, it's easy to make a lotion or a liniment at home.
Purchase an unscented, natural lotion and the essential oils of your choice.
Transfer lotion into a flip-top plastic container, and fill it about three-quarters full. Four-ounce containers are handy and will last quite a long time.
Add essential oil to the lotion. For 4 ounces of lotion, use approximately 1 teaspoon of oil.
Shake well and apply as needed.
Fill a one-pint glass canning jar three-quarters full with isopropyl alcohol. Add either one teaspoon of essential oil(s) or freshly cut sprigs of aromatic herbs, such as citronella geranium, lemon grass or rosemary.
Cover your jar securely and shake it well. Allow your mixture to sit in a dark place to "steep" for one to two weeks.
Strain out the fresh herbs if you used them.
Bottle your liniment in flip-top plastic bottles for ease of use and convenience.
