Plant ginger to provide ginger root for cooking.

Prepare the planting container by filling it with a mixture of half sand and half potting soil. Mix the two materials completely. Place the rhizome into the pot and place approximately one inch of soil over the rhizome. Water the soil generously and place the container in a location that receives direct sun while the rhizome is sprouting.
Keep the soil evenly moist during the sprouting time.
Watch the container for sprouts to appear. When you see sprouts emerging through the soil, move the container to a location that receives indirect sunlight. Keep the soil moist at all times.
Move the container to a permanent shade location outside if the temperatures are over 50 degrees Fahrenheit by gradually hardening the plant off to the outdoors. Place it outdoors for several hours during the afternoon for four days. After four days, place the ginger plant in its permanent location.
Fertilize the ginger plant two times with the general fertilizer over the growing season. Follow the recommendations on the fertilizer package for fertilizer amounts for your plant size. Keep the ginger plant well-watered.
Bring the ginger plant back inside when the temperatures become cooler than 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Store the ginger in a cool location that will not freeze. Trim off any yellowed portions of the plant and water the soil once per month over the winter. In the spring, move the container to a warm location and look for new growth to begin.
Harvest ginger by carefully cutting off portions of the root you can see at the top of the soil.
