Building a stepping stone pathway is a great way to add decoration to your garden area. With a wide variety of stones available, you can design your pathway as both a useful function as well as an amazing garden decoration. Whether you choose to make the stones yourself or buy them from a home improvement store, your pathway will be an extension of your garden and your design ideas.
Layout and Design
Layout and design of your path is as simple as walking through your garden area. What areas do you want to lead people to? Is it a corner bistro set, your favorite climbing rose or even a sanctuary with a bench for contemplative thoughts during the summer evenings. Remember your pathway can be whatever design you want, whether filled with twists and turns or a straight path, it is entirely up to you.
Cut out the sod in the shape of the stepping stones that you have chosen, if your path will lead through grass or sod. For this example we are using circular stepping stones. While cutting a circle might seem difficult, remember it doesn't have to be perfect. Use your string line to set up your navigational path, with one end of the string line at the beginning in the shape you are looking to achieve.
Dig up the sod in the path, if you plan on planting bedding flowers around the stones. If you intend to plant flowers you don't have to worry too much about the size and shape you are cutting into the sod. If you are not intending to plant flowers, decide the shape you want to dig out, using the actual stone as your template. Do one at a time and test the results as you go along.
For this example we are using a straight path with circular stones and planting aromatic flowers around them. Dig 1 inch down into the sod, place your stone in the center of the hole and place the flowers down surrounding the stepping stone. Continue until you get to the end of your pathway. Enjoy your new garden decoration.
