Grammie Thibodeau's Homemade Brown Bread Recipe

Step 1

Prep yeast according to package directions.

Step 2

Once yeast has been proven active add the 4 cups of warm water, molasses, salt, sugar, melted margarine and combine together.

Step 3

Gradually add flour, stirring it in until you can handle it easily.

Step 4

Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it until it forms a smooth ball. Place into a lightly greased bowl, rotating dough so that it is evenly coated. Cover with a damp cloth.

Step 5

Let rise until double in size.

Step 6

Punch down and form into loaves. Place in lightly greased bread pans and let rise again.

Step 7

Bake at 350 F for about 40 minutes.

Step 8

Brush tops of loaves with butter/margarine.

  • 2envelopes active yeast
  • 1/2cup melted butter/margarine
  • All- purpose flour (approximately 6 cups)
