Pilli-Pilli Sauce Recipe


Pilli-Pilli is the little hot red pepper of Africa. Similar to the crushed red pepper used on pizza. This recipe is a bit toned down from it's African origins, but it is nice and adds a nice clean heat to dishes. In the Portuguese colonies in Africa, the chilies are blended with lemon juice only and the sauce is called Piri Piri.

Step 1

Blend all of the ingredients in a mixing bowl. Keep refrigerated in a covered container. Serve as a relish or sauce.

Things You'll Need

  • 2cups tomato sauce, canned
  • 1/2cup lemon juice
  • 1/2cup white onions, finely chopped
  • 1tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1tablespoon crushed red pepper (pilli-pilli)
  • 1tablespoon vegetable oil
