Overview

Begonias, also known as begonia semperflorens-cultorum, are common garden flowers among gardeners today. A species comprised of more than 900 types, begonias are highly praised for the variety of color variations they offer. With thick, dark green foliage, begonias can complement almost any garden scene and make stunning potted flowers as well. These Brazilian natives love to grow in well-drained, partially shaded areas that are sheltered by much larger plants and trees. Begonias can easily be grown when the right conditions are provided.

Step 1

Plant the begonia plant(s) in an area that contains well-drained soil and receives plentiful morning sun, but receives partial shade during the hottest portion of the day. Begonias do not tolerate high heat provided by full sun conditions.

Step 2

Water the begonia plant(s) as needed. Begonia plants have thick waxy foliage that stores moisture and allows them to not need frequent watering sessions. The soil generally should be moist to the touch, but never soaked.

Step 3

Treat common begonia pests, such as mealy bugs and thrips, using a insecticide/pesticide according to the package directions.

Step 4

Cure fungus, such as stem rot and leaf spotting, using a fungicide to treat the begonias.

Step 5

Fertilize the begonias using an all-purpose liquid fertilizer according to the package directions.

Tips and Warnings

  • Move potted begonias into a heated greenhouse (if available) or indoors before the first frost. Begonias are unable to tolerate frost.
