How to Adjust Handle Height on a Murray Walk-Behind Lawn Mower

Murray Mowers are among the most popular American lawn mowers and frequently get high marks from such unbiased publications as Consumer Report. Murray walk-behind lawn mowers also offer a plethora of features that homeowners love such as mulching and bagging, side or rear discharge, and the ability to adjust the handle height.

Instructions

Step 1

Grasp the wing nut located on the inside of the handle bracket and mounted next to the right rear wheel of the mower housing. Turn the wing nut counter clockwise until it detaches completely from the retaining bolt. Repeat the process on the wing nut on the left side of the mower. Set the wing nuts aside.

Step 2

Push the retaining bolts on either side of the mower out of the handle brackets. Set the retaining bolts aside. To adjust the handle to its "High" position proceed to Step Three. To adjust the handle to its "Low" position proceed to Step Four.

Step 3

Position the hole in the right side of the lower handle to align with the lower adjustment hole in the right handle bracket. Slide the retaining bolt through both holes from the outside in-ward. Position the hole in the left side of the lower handle to align with the lowest adjustment hole in the left handle bracket. Slide the retaining bolt through both holes from the outside in-ward. Place the wing nuts onto their corresponding retaining bolts. Tighten the wing nuts by turning them clockwise until they are finger tight.

Step 4

Position the hole in the right side of the lower handle to align with the upper adjustment hole in the right handle bracket. Slide the retaining bolt through both holes from the outside in-ward. Position the hole in the left side of the lower handle to align with the upper adjustment hole in the left handle bracket. Slide the retaining bolt through both holes from the outside in-ward. Place the wing nuts onto their corresponding retaining bolts. Tighten the wing nuts by turning them clockwise until they are finger tight.

Tips and Warnings

The "High" position is approximately 4inches higher than the "Low" position.
