How to Preserve the Smell of the Christmas Tree
One of the benefits of having a freshly cut Christmas tree is the wonderfully fresh pine smell. In order to ensure the fresh smell lasts throughout the holiday season, tree owners must take special care to preserve the tree. With proper tree care and a few tricks, the household can enjoy the pine smell throughout the Christmas season; from the day the tree enters the house until its time to take the Christmas tree down.
Cut approximately 1 inch from the bottom of the tree. Whether the Christmas tree was freshly cut or purchased from a lot, it is important to cut 1 inch from the bottom of the tree when you bring it home. Cutting off the bottom of the tree allows the tree to freely absorb the water in the tree stand.
Keep the tree adequately watered. The best way to preserve the fresh smell of Christmas tree is to keep the tree adequately watered. Dried trees do not retain the fresh pine smell. It is especially important to frequently check the water level for the first few days after the tree is cut. This is the time when trees absorb water the fastest.
Remove the tree from heat sources. Although the Christmas tree looks lovely sitting next to the fireplace, be careful. The heat from the fireplace will cause the tree to dry out quicker causing the fresh smell to dissipate quicker. To really help to retain the fresh smell, it is recommend to lower the thermostat of the room in which the tree is located.
Hold on to the trimmings. On occasion fresh Christmas trees have wayward branches that require trimming. Don't throw the trimmed Christmas tree branches away. Keep the branches and use them as decoration and air freshener. By placing the trimmed branches decoratively around the house, the fresh pine smell is allowed to permeate throughout. No one has to know that it's not coming from the tree directly but emanating from the branches cleverly sprinkled around the house.
Hide a fan behind the tree. A small fan on a low setting, properly aimed and hidden behind the Christmas tree can help to distribute the fresh pine smell throughout the house. The fan also serves to maintain a lower temperature around the Christmas tree, thus preserving the fresh smell.
