A great way to remember past holidays is to make a picture Christmas ornament. This is a great way to start a family tradition because you can add a new ornament each year. These are very easy to make and can be decorated to match your Christmas style. Here are some ideas on how to make a picture Christmas ornament.
Cut a piece of cardboard into a unique shape. It could be star, tree or even a reindeer. You can find templates all over the Internet to tape to the cardboard to make the job a little easier (see Resources below).
Cut your picture as close to the shape of the cardboard as possible, only make it a little bit smaller. You may want to use the same template again. Be sure the picture is smaller than the cardboard.
Center your picture and laminate it to the cardboard. You can purchase laminate sheets from any office supply or craft store, or you can just use clear packaging tape. Just be sure the edges are not showing from the front. Whichever you decide, once you put it on the picture, it usually cannot be removed.
Trim off all of the excess laminate and maybe some of the cardboard. The key is to leave a small area of cardboard to decorate. Consider using a glue stick to attach a colored paper to the cardboard before laminating the picture. This would allow for less decoration around the picture and may save you some time.
Punch a hole in the top of the ornament to thread your ribbon or wire. You can also string beads or other decorative items on the hanger for your ornament. You are now ready to decorate.
Consider traditional items like glitter, stickers hand-drawn designs for decorating the ornament. Also think a little outside the box--macaroni, seeds and pieces of colored shoestrings make good decorations.
Be sure to let the glue dry completely before hanging. Include the date you made the ornament and even a small sentence or two about the picture on the back. Once dry, your picture Christmas ornament is ready to hang.
