How to Make Tree Shaped Candle Covers

This quick project makes a shimmering tree shaped candle cover that reflects the natural glow of candles through its intricately punched design. Made with a sheet of aluminum tooling and a simple design of stars and lines, this little tree candle cover adds to the festivities at any gathering, as it appeals to both young and old alike. The sleek design blends with any decor from rustic to elaborate. Make it the focal point of your Christmas dinner or display it in the guest room to give your guests a warm welcome.

Instructions

Step 1

Purchase a sheet of aluminum tooling foil, available at craft stores. These come in sheets or rolls in a variety of colors. Select aluminum for a shimmering effect or choose another color of your choice.

Step 2

Cut a square of tracing paper to 6 1/2 by 6 1/2 inches. Use a compass or the edge of a plate to trace a rounded edge from the upper left corner to the lower right corner of the paper. Cut 1/2 inch off the tip of the upper right corner so the angle runs parallel to the curved edge. Fold into a cone and try it over the top of a small votive holder. It should fit easily over the votive holder. Make adjustments to the paper for a proper fit.

Step 3

Print out appropriate patterns from any graphics program on your computer. Look for miniature outlines of stars, snowmen, holly leaves or any other seasonal design you desire. Trace or sketch design on the paper, with the paper in front of you so the curved edge is nearest your body. Simple outlines and swirls work best. Create evenly spaced dots along the outline.

Step 4

Place the paper with the design facing you onto the aluminum tooling and cut the tooling to the dimensions of the paper. Tape in place to prevent paper from slipping. Place on a block of scrap wood or a thick layer of newspapers. Punch the design in through the paper and the tooling with an awl and hammer. Punch three larger holes along the two straight sides at evenly spaced intervals. These will be used to secure the cone together so ensure that they are aligned with each other.

Step 5

Remove the paper and shape the tooling into a cone. Check to be sure it fits properly over the votive candle. Secure the cone by twisting florist wire through the large holes on the sides. Display over a lighted votive candle.

Tips and Warnings

Alter the size of the sheet of tooling to fit larger or smaller candles. Order aluminum tooling foil at MisterArt (see Resources). Select the roll, as the sheets are too small for this project.
