High-fructose corn syrup, otherwise known as HFCS, is a common sweetener found in many American foods. According to the Mayo Clinic, many foods that are made with high-fructose corn syrup are low in nutrients and high in calories. (It's created by changing the glucose (sugar) to another form of sugar, known as fructose. High-fructose corn syrup is that combination of fructose and glucose. The vast majority of foods that contain high-fructose corn syrup are processed foods.
One food that does not contain high-fructose corn syrup is old-fashioned oats. This only applies to the old-fashioned kind that you cook yourself, not the oatmeal that comes in a packet and is processed already. There is a strong likelihood that those contain a sweetener which may be fructose corn syrup.
While fresh fruit does contain natural sugars, it does not contain HFCS. This only holds true if you purchase it whole from the grocery store, or pick it yourself. If it is part of something that has already been processed, such as canned fruit cocktail or anything that has sweetener, there is a good chance that it does contain HFCS.
Another food that is low in high-fructose corn syrup is milk. Standard milk does not contain high-fructose corn syrup. Milk can be used on cereal and you can also drink it. This does not necessarily apply to chocolate milk or other flavored milk. Check the labels for added sweetener or corn syrup.
Dry pasta generally does not contain much high-fructose corn syrup. To be certain, make sure to check the label. If possible, purchase dry pasta in the health food section. You can also make pasta yourself at home.
